Hot Chilli Hummus Recipe
Making your hummus spicy with fresh chilli’s is a good way to give your regular hummus a bite! Red chilli and garlic give your hummus some amazing flavor. You can make it as spicy or hot as you like by adding or omitting the fresh chilli’s. You could also substitute dried chilli flakes or a chilli sauce if you do not have fresh chillies on hand.
The taste of fresh chillies is very different to the chilli flakes or sauces, so think about this before you decide which way you are going to go with spicing up your hummus dip recipe.
Spicing Things Up
You can spice up regular hummus recipes with some heat from red or green chilli’s or jalapenos as well. This all depends on which type you prefer to eat and who is going to eat the chilli. For example it is not a good idea to serve up hot chilli dips to older people or children as they prefer bland recipes. It’s easy enough to add them to your hummus recipe if you prefer your food on the spicy side.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 can of chickpeas. Drain and rinse.
- 2 cloves fresh garlic or 2 teaspoons of store bought minced garlic.
- 2 Tablespoons of Tahini (hulled)
- Fresh Chilli (One or two should suffice for a good bite)
- The juice of 1 fresh lemon
- 3 or 4 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- Salt to taste. I use freshly ground salt as it’s taste is much more defined.
- 4 Tablespoons cool water
METHOD
Place the rinsed chickpeas in the blender and process until light and fluffy. Add the fresh chilli and garlic. Process a further minute. Add the tahini slowly, and process for another minute. Then add the salt, the lemon and olive oil. Process this for another minute. Add the water slowly, until a thick paste has formed. Scrape the sides down every few minutes. If you like it thinner and more runny then add more water and/or olive oil. The thickness is a personal taste. Garnish with some olives and chilli slices.
I used to love spicy foods and can go for some now with the winter approaching. I haven’t had spicy hummus. I wonder if I would like it. This recipe sounds super simple to do. I will check out Youtube to see if I can find a video with someone making it. I think I may have some organic chickpeas left. I only use organic when I make hummus.
Chilli YUM! I like to put jalapeños on everything. I see a store bought hummus that has ground up jalapeños on the top of it. I am gonna try that on the basic hummus.
